THE DATA

Seniors

The U.S. population aged 65 and older is expanding significantly. In 2024, this group was estimated at 61.2 million—about 18% of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This steady rise is primarily driven by the aging Baby Boomer generation, and projections indicate substantial future growth, with the population of adults 65 and older expected to reach 82 million by 2050.

The number of family caregivers for older adults in the U.S. increased from 18.2 million in 2011 to 24.1 million in 2022, a rise of 32%. Caregivers often assist with daily activities, and a significant portion, over 31%, provide care for 20 or more hours per week. Studies show that caregiving can lead to increased stress and has been linked to negative health indicators, particularly for those caring for individuals with dementia.

Notably, 29% of caregivers belong to the "sandwich generation" (caregivers in their 30s to 60s), a significant group, often experiencing higher levels of financial and emotional strain because they are caring for both children and aging parents. There are an estimated 53 million unpaid family caregivers, and 73% of them are working, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
